ANOTHER DRIVER, ANOTHER PODIUM IN TOWNSVILLE
16-07-2010
Kiwi sensation, Nick Cassidy, has kicked off his foray into Australian motorsport with a podium place on the streets of Townsville. Despite having never driven a Mygale or Duratec-powered car before the race weekend, the 15year old put in a sterling drive in the final race to finish a strong 3rd – setting the second fastest lap in the process.

The Auckland-native impressed right throughout the weekend, improving his times in every session and improving his finishing position in each race.

‘’What a dream debut! We knew it was going to be pretty tough going up against the high level of competition over here without any testing. So to come away with a podium and having genuine front-running pace is extremely encouraging’’ said Nick

‘’Working with the team and my engineer, Gerard, has been really beneficial to myself as it has identified some areas that I can further improve and we’ve already seen good progress made here. We’ve got a testing program in place over the coming months and with this in place I’m sure we’ll be in a position to fight for race and round victories.’’

Andre Borell had a less successful weekend driving his Simpro/Master Electricians Mygale. Unfortunately he has been unable to repeat his front-running form which he demonstrated at Queensland Raceway earlier in the season.

Andre, who is also representing Australia at the Triathlon World Cup in Hungary in September, did show glimpses of what he is capable of, running as high as 5th place in the final race. However his bad luck continued when he was taken out from behind at the final corner of the last lap.

‘’Not the best race meeting I’ve had this year. It all went a bit pear-shaped when we bent a roll bar after hitting one of Townsville’s massive kerbs in Qualifying. That put me back in the pack for the races, and it’s always difficult to recover from there with the competition the way it is this year’’.

Evans Motorsport Group team boss Joshua Evans was overall satisfied with the results of the weekend, but was looking forward to doing some development testing in the coming weeks.

‘’Overall it wasn’t a bad weekend. Obviously Nick has demonstrated he is a star of the future. Not only did he prove his ability inside the cockpit with a fine 3rd place with no testing, he and Gerard (his engineer) developed a good working relationship which will in turn push forward our vehicle development and set-up configurations. We all look forward to working with him in the future’’.

‘’Unfortunately Andre endured another tough weekend of racing. We know he is capable of better results; it’s just a case of working on a couple weaknesses. We’ve got quite an intense testing program for him once his triathlon commitments are completed in Hungary this September. He is currently the only Evans Motorsport Group driver not to have stood on the podium, We’re sure this will be rectified by seasons end.’’

The Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship takes a mid season break, with competition resuming at Surfers Paradise on October 22-24.
