CHAZ IN CHARGE IN TOWNSVILLE
11-07-2010
Chaz Mostert has dominated the inaugural Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship event at the Townsville Street Circuit during Round 5 of the Series.

The Synergy Motorsport Spectrum driver was untouchable all weekend taking three wins comfortably to extend his championship lead.

Ash Walsh and Ryan Simpson finished second and third for the round and gained some valuable championship points on a weekend that saw many of the front-runners strike dramas. Neither could match Mostert though and he now leads the series by 49 points.

“The Townsville circuit is awesome and it’s really well suited to the Synergy Motorsport Spectrum,” Mostert said.

“I’m really happy with my own performance this weekend. I tried my best for my mum, who passed away just one year ago, so this weekend is for her.

“It was a good weekend for the championship, but there is still a long way to go and anything can happen; we’re not getting too confident.”

Walsh finished in second for the round after some strong pace late in the weekend. After a slightly slow start, Walsh moved forward progressively taking two hard fought second places in races two and three.

“I’m happy to make the most of this weekend. We didn’t start the way we wanted, but the speed got better as the races wore on,” Walsh said.

“Chaz is starting to get a big gap in the championship and congratulations to him, but we got some good points towards our title race this weekend with some of the other guys struggling.”

Sonic Mygale driver Ryan Simpson finished in third for the weekend and was the only Team Sonic driver not to experience dramas during an interesting round.

“We had pretty good pace all weekend, but the car wasn’t consistently fast and slightly difficult to put a clean lap together,” Simpson said.

“I made some small errors over the three races that cost us a slightly higher finish, but I have to be happy a podium at the end of the day.”

Linde Mygale driver and 15-year-old Cameron Waters had his best weekend of the year to finish in fourth and take over the lead in the rookie of the year points.

New Zealander Nick Cassidy was fifth ahead of Geoff Uhrhane, Jack LeBrocq and Nick Foster, who had a weekend to forget. Caleb Rayner and Tom Williamson rounded out the top 10.

Nathan Morcom had his second roll-over in two rounds after climbing over the back of Andre Borell. Both drivers were uninjured in the accident.

The EWP Hard Charger award went to local driver Zac Schonberger.

The Kangan Motorsport Training Award for best presented car went to Ash Walsh.

Round 6 of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship will take place at the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit on the Gold Coast on October 22-24.
