 Championship leader Chaz Mostert has become the first Formula Ford driver to take victory on the Townsville Street Circuit by dominating Race 1 during Round 5 of the Genuine Formula Ford Championship today.
Mostert narrowly missed out on taking pole position earlier in the day, but fought his way to the front of the pack early in the race.
From there he pulled away steadily from the Team Sonic trio of Nick Foster, Geoff Uhrhane and Ryan Simpson to finish well clear.
“The main focus each weekend we go racing is to keep gaining points, because there is still a long way to go in this series,” Mostert said.
“We managed to grab the victory today and a few points over our main rivals. I’m just ecstatic with how the Synergy Motorsport spectrum has performed this weekend and I have to thank the team and everybody that has been helping me out for that.”
Foster finished second in the race after a good battle with Mygale teammates Geoff Uhrhane and pole-sitter Ryan Simpson.
“I think we have the car pace this weekend to really challenge Chaz, but we lost some time today trying to find our way through to second,” Foster said.
“It’s a great circuit and that promotes some great racing, which we saw between myself and my teammates today.”
Queenslander Uhrhane challenged Mostert early in the race, but had to settle for third in the dying stages of the race.
“The car is OK this weekend, but there is definitely some good racing going on,” Uhrhane said.
“We got a little lucky in qualifying to still start fourth for the race after missing most of the session when I made a small error. We’ll be back tomorrow and hopefully we can move up a few spots.”
Ryan Simpson finished fourth ahead of Ash Walsh and Jack LeBrocq. Cameron Waters was seventh in a Mygale, while Nick Cassidy, Liam Sager and Tom Goess rounded out the 10.
Round 5 of the series continues with Races 2 and 3 tomorrow at the Townsville Street Circuit.
