Chaz Mostert came out firing during practice for Round 3 of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Winton Motor Raceway today.
Mostert dominated both sessions, setting nearly identical times in both, almost two tenths faster than the rest of the field. Fellow Spectrum drivers Ash Walsh and Ben Jurczak came closest to the Queenslander, but were unable to match his early speed.
“It’s the perfect way to start the weekend, especially after what was a slightly disappointing round in Queensland,” said Mostert.
“We know this championship is all about being consistent, so if I can continue to run at the front and stay out of trouble, then I think we have a good shot.”
Walsh was second fastest, after setting his quick time in the morning session. Despite not being able to match in Practice 2, Walsh was happy with the day’s work.
“We made a few changes between the two sessions, which didn’t work as we hoped, but we’ll go back to the original set-up for tomorrow,” said Walsh.
“It’s really close up the front of the field, so I need to make sure I put a good lap together tomorrow in qualifying, which will hopefully put me in the top three.”
Walsh’s Borland Racing Developments teammate, Ben Jurczak, was third fastest having worked on set-up throughout the morning.
“I used the first session to get back in the groove here because I haven’t driven here in a while,” said Jurczak.
“I felt a lot more comfortable in the second session and I think it really showed in the times. We’re still learning, but I think we’re in a good position for tomorrow.”
Sonic pilot Nick Foster was the fastest of the Mygales’ in fourth, ahead of rookies Jesse Fenech and Liam Sager, while Ryan Simpson, Adam Graham, Nathan Morcom and Nick McBride rounded out the top 10.
Round 3 of the series continues with qualifying and Race 1 tomorrow at Winton Motor Raceway.
