Chaz Mostert took out Round 1 of the Genuine Ford Parts Australian Formula Ford Championship at Albert Park today.
After dominating Race 1 yesterday, Mostert was on track for another strong finish, when the race was red flagged due to accident involving Caleb Rayner, which forced the cancelation and scrapping of Race 2.
Rayner was taken to hospital for observation following the accident, which occurred at turn three on lap two of Race 2.
With Race 2 not counting towards the championship, Mostert has a slender points lead over the Steeline Mygale of Nick Foster and the Parramatta Smash Repairs Mygale of Ryan Simpson.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to perform on this stage here at the Grand Prix, it’s just a shame that Race 2 was cut short, because it was shaping up to be a really good battle,” Mostert said.
“It’s a great event and we really do enjoy coming here each year. I had a great car all weekend and I’m really excited for the rest of the season.
“There are some really fast guys in the championship this year and I think this weekend proved just how close it’s going to be.”
Foster’s second position is his best round finish in the Australian Formula Ford Championship, but he too lamented a lack of running in Race 2.
“We started off on the back foot with a poor qualifying performance, but I’m pleased with how well we fought back across the weekend,” he said.
“It’s a shame that Race 2 got red flagged, but it’s nice to know that we are one of the five or six guys that have a good chance of winning the championship this year.”
For third placed Simpson his result marked an impressive debut for Sonic Motor Racing Services after moving across from Synergy Motorsport last year.
“We missed the setup at the start of the weekend, but we were able to work through it and I think that by Race 2 we had something really good to work with,” Simpson said.
“I’m really enjoying working with Sonic, they are such a professionally run outfit and I think as the season goes on we are only going to get stronger.”
Ash Walsh was fourth for the round in a Spectrum ahead of fellow Spectrum driver Nathan Morcom.
The next round of the championship will take place at Queensland Raceway on April 30 - May 2.
